28-pound limit to win Berryessa | Future Pro Tour

For many, the excitement and anticipation leading up to the Coors Light Future Pro Tour’s season opener is comparable only to opening day of the baseball season.

The unique smell of fresh cut infield grass, and sounds of baseball bats “cracking” and fans chatting, is not unlike the experience anglers feel as they drive thru the winding roads that lead to Lake Berryessa and visually absorb the spectacular views of springtime grass and wild flowers that unfold before them – culminating in the anticipation of rejoining fellow competitors for a new season of fishing fun.

And the 15th anniversary of the Coors Light Future Pro Tour was indeed a special one and marked a milestone achievement for the organization, as for 15 years straight, another 100-plus field of boats participated in its season opening event.

Heavy rains from the night before did not produce the cold “blue bird” skies one normally sees after a cold front passes, as sunshine, accompanied by flat calm water conditions, greeted nearly 135 teams for the mornings blast-off activities.

Some teams stayed within eyesight of the launch ramp, hoping to capitalize on the hundreds of fish that have been released in the Pleasure Cove Marina area over the past month, and some ran to parts unknown. But at the end of the day, Bob Spencer and Carson Leber took top honors with a five-fish limit that weighed nearly 28 pounds!

They were secretive about their techniques, as they plan to participate in other events, such as the Guns Fishing, and Other Stuff new Sunday series events that are held on Berryessa, but did indicate that they targeted and found success in the areas where big females had begun to move up for the spawn.

For the victory they took home $2,820 dollars and two custom plaques. Congratulations Bob and Carson on winning the 2017 Napa Valley Challenge!
