FLIPPIN, ARK. - With a three-day total of 74.89 pounds, Ranger pro Scott Larson capitalized on a remarkable final day to win the 2015 Cabela's National Walleye Tour championship at Devils Lake, N.D., on Sept. 19. Larson entered the championship's final day more than seven pounds back before weighing 29.25 pounds to win the event and take home $83,000 in total winnings.
Larson's memorable final day vaulted him from sixth place to first and was capped off by a prize package that included a fully equipped Ranger 621FS, an upgraded prize boat thanks to his Ranger Cup contingency bonus. Larson also took home a 225-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $15,000 in first-place prize money.
"This is my first major win, and to do it on my home water makes it that much better," the Mayville, N.D., pro said. "Devils Lake is a special place."
Larson's championship-winning trolling bite was one many other anglers found in Pelican Lake. The difference is that Larson was able to catch limits quickly while others struggled thanks to one key adjustment.
"I slowed way down," Larson said. "Most guys were in that 2-2.2 mph range. I was trolling at 1.5-1.6 mph. Other guys were just going too fast and trolling above the fish's heads."
While Devils Lake is known for its abundance of walleye, it is also notorious for high winds, which can be especially difficult while trolling. Larson credited his Ranger 620FS as one of the keys of success at this tournament.
"No one in the industry has a boat that's even close to it," said Larson. "The new hull design of the 620FS can handle those rough waves with its impressive stability and performance. It's so important in tournaments to make that first pass. The performance of my boat gave me the ability to be the first one there. It's just a solid boat and was a big factor in my win."
