Rare giant sturgeon fishing in the Bay

 

In a world few know — but most anybody would deem filled with intrigue — a group of roughly 20 anglers discovered great sturgeon fishing in the past week at a bay pier.

A series of encounters with giant sturgeon, including a 6½-footer released in a dramatic show, has made McNear’s Pier, near San Rafael on San Pablo Bay south of China Camp State Park, the No. 1 fishing spot in California for those without a boat.

The action started Wednesday, reported field scout Michael Rebolledo, when about 10 fishermen caught 10 sturgeon, the bay’s elusive and prized giant. That was followed by similar days Thursday and Friday.

Then Saturday, with about 20 anglers facing a strong wind, roughly 10 legal-sized sturgeon were caught again, another 20 were lost — and a ton of bites were missed.

“We’re in kind of a hidden world out there,” Rebolledo said. “Nobody knows that it’s going to go crazy, and then it goes off.”

In one siege, Rebolledo said, fishermen hooked and fought eight keeper-sized sturgeon.
