In a continuation of his Rat-L-Trap Rundown series, Mark Daniels Jr. checked in with some advice on line selection for fishing lipless crankbaits. Here is what he had to say ...
'TRAP #4 - BRAID VS. FLUORO
A lot of guys like to throw 'Traps on braided line and that works great for poppin' 'em free from the grass, because braid has no stretch.
With that said, personally, I have lost a lot of fish using braid because of that "no stretch" quality that it has.
Due to that, I like to throw a Rat-L-Trap on fluorocarbon. Seaguar InvizX or Tatsu is my preference.
I use 15-lb-test on the 1/2 oz 'Trap or upsize to 20 lb with the 3/4 oz size. I like the heavier line on the heavier 'Trap, because it helps it lift a little more. The 3/4 oz 'Trap is a heavier lure and I don't want it to dredge the bottom. That is why I like it to have some lift. I want it to get to the top level of the grass and tick across it as I retrieve it.
You can find the Seaguar line that I use at Hi's Tackle Box Shop. Hi's also has two exclusive Rat-L-Trap colors. They have ghost baitfish and Hi's Clear Lake Special. If you want to throw a color that not everybody else, these can only be purchased at Hi's.
