SPO Friday Frog Flashback - More secrets from 2011

A Dixon duo was among the 175 boats that competed in the "frog only" tournament on the California Delta this weekend. Tournament pro Brett Leber and Gone Fishin' Marine salesman Luke Peacock teamed up to hunt for big bass in the 2011 Snag Proof Open. They hooked up again today to share their secrets to a top-5 finish.

Their interview showed experience pays off as the veteran angler on the boat, Leber stated, "We didn't have time to pre fish; so, I just hit some areas I knew in the Southeast Delta. We focused on protected bays and stayed in one area due to the time limitation."

Staying local to their target area, the fishing team described covering a lot of water and dividing their attention with each of them casting to different depths.

Leber touted the team's top-notch hook-up ratio, with five of their seven bites boated the first day.

The tide change for Day 2 wasn't as easy in their area; but, they stuck to the location and keyed in on the deeper banks.

They revealed their best water was the higher tide and their best bait was Bobby's Perfect in Cicada and Florida Bass.

The pair offered these positioning pointers ...

boat at the bank for parallel casts through the trough and near the rip-rap on higher water
cast around berms and outside weed lines on the low tide
holding the boat to cast to 3 ft of water was a crucial element to finding fish

Varying their speeds, they revealed their retrieve was slow across the mats and swift over open water.

Their consistency showed when they grabbed the 4th place spot on the leaderboard for Day 1 and held on to it until the end of the two-day tournament. Their 12.22 three-fish limit on Saturday held two over 5-lbs, as shown in the photo with Peacock. Althougth their Sunday weight was lighter, they lessened the gap between 1st and 4th by gaining 2-lbs on the leaders.

They shared their disappointment in not getting the "right bites" on Day 2 as a win was in sight.
