Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying a Bass Boat

Whether you are looking for a new or used boat, there are several items to consider. Finding the right boat for both your needs and budget takes time, research and the knowledge to get the best boat for your money. Nate Chandler, Sales Manager at Boatmasters in Livermore, Calif. works closely with customers during this process and has some tips on finding the perfect boat.

  1. Bass Boat Wants Vs. Needs

If money was no object, everyone would have a top of the line boat with all the options. That is not realistic as everyone has different needs for their bass boat and each person has a budget they can afford. With that in mind, Chandler recommends creating a list of both your wants and your needs, which can vary greatly, and then look at your budget. “I advise people to spend more on the size of the boat and horsepower than they want instead of focusing on the accessories. First, determine what you can afford and then decide what accessories you can add,” he says. Accessories can always be added later, while the size of boat and engine horsepower are things you will have to live with.

  1. Choosing the Right Outboard for Your Bass Boat

Chandler says to focus on the size of the engine and to not under power a boat. “I recommend either the biggest engine that the boat is rated for or a 250 horsepower on the larger boats. Underpowered boats have less performance and can hurt your resale when it is time to sell your boat,” he says and added that underpowered boats lose their value much quicker. “The bigger engines have higher resale and less depreciation.  Boats with smaller than maximum engines limit who will buy the boat and eliminates a whole segment of buyers, typically the tournament guys.”

  1. Bass Boat Buying Options

Like outboards, accessories and options can increase the value of your boat and help you catch more fish. Chandler has seen that some options add value and performance while others may lose their value quickly.

  • Electronics – "For most people, a 7" screen is adequate and can do everything the bigger units can at a larger screen can. The problem is after a year or two they are obsolete and a bigger unit has much more depreciation," says Chandler.
  • Battery System – Like under powering a boat with an outboard, trolling motor batteries also affect performance and resale value. “On a larger boat, a 24V system is underpowered and a 36V will have better performance. On the other hand, I have seen smaller boats with a 36V that would be just fine with a 24V,” he shares.
  • Prop - “Stainless steel props help performance and if you decide to resell your boat it will help,” says Chandler.
  • Shallow Water Anchors – While Power-Poles and Talons are great tools, they will not recoup the cost according to Chandler. “If you plan to keep the boat long-term, they are worth it,” he says.
  • LED lighting, stereos and security systems – These are nice features for many anglers, but like shallow water anchors, they do not help with resale according to Chandler. “They make your boat more appealing if you want to resell it but they do not add value.”
  1. Single Vs. Dual Axle Bass Boat Trailers

Both single and dual axle trailers have their own benefits. Single axle trailers are more maneuverable and dual axle trailers provide better towing for long distances. The size of the boat is often the determination on which type of trailer will be included, but there are mid-sized boats that can come with either. “I always tell people to look at how they will be using it. If they are just fishing local lakes, a single axle is fine and you also have less maintenance with just two tires and they are also easier to maneuver into a garage,” he says.

  1. Used Bass Boat Inspection

If you are going the used route, a thorough inspection from a mechanic is a must. “I would say an inspection is more important than even test driving it on the water. You want to find a dealership with a dyno to get all of the engine information and they will also be able to check things like the integrity of the hull and trailer,” adds Chandler.
