Water diversion on streamflow and macroinvertebrates on small streams in Humboldt County

CDFW Environmental Scientist Nicholas Simpson recently presented the results of an interesting study on the effects of water diversion on streamflow and macroinvertebrates on small streams in Humboldt County. Scientists wanted to know how water diversions – which are commonly used in this area for abating road dust during timber harvesting operations – were affecting aquatic macroinvertebrate communities, the primary food base for amphibians and fish downstream.
