Catching and using thread find shad at Clearlake?

Post by cib11b »

Is it legal to catch thread find shad on Clearlake and use then as live bait on Clearlake? I an planning to use a home made minnow trap made within the legal requirements.

Your answer is no, I would call Dep of Fish and Wildlife on that one to be sure your not getting into hot water. I understand that it is natural bait but I would make a call first.

It is legal to use threadfin and silverside at Clearlake for bait. You can catch them with dip net or trap only ,not over 3 ft.No snagging with hooks and cast nets are not legal in any CA. freshwater.

Thank you Dave. Any bait recommendations? I was going to use bread.

I think throw nets are illegal for FW use (salt only) ?, but I have seen guys use a basket type net that worked like a charm !..I give it till the end of the week' and all you need to catch Shad will be a "shovel" they are getting thick !.... & the artificial bite is already starting to suffer !....

The place I stay at has a concrete break wall. The shad run up and down the wall throughout the day. A dip net would get me plenty of them but I wanted to make sure it was legal. Just trying to get my 3 year old hooked up with some fish.

I do know that the shad are a lot harder to keep alive then the store bought minnows.
