HDS 7 Gen 2 Touch - Transducer questions

Post by SoCalAngler »

Hello--
Reviewed the forums but nothing to completely answer my questions.

I am considering the purchase of a new HDS 7 G2 Touch with the LSS-2. I will install on my center console near VHF and stereo.

Questions; I can't figure out which transducer to get; the 83kHz/200kHz or 50kHz/200kHz. How will one benefit me over the other for the type and amount of fishing I do?

My uses:

90% of time: Fish primarily freshwater So Cal lakes (DVL, Skinner, Silverwood) and occasional trips up to Havasu, Lake Mojave, and Colorado river. Target species....Stripe, trout, crappie, cats

10% of time: I also fish saltwater in SoCal (usually inshore within 5 miles....San Diego, La Jolla, Long Beach, etc...maybe a trip to Catalina once or twice a year). target species....Yellowtail, WSB, and other pelagics

My boat: 17' Gregor alum CC.

Thanks for the assistance!

Since you are 90% freshwater and only 10% in the salt, go with the 83/200 ducer. The 50 khz is mainly for the denser and deeper salt water but the 83 will work down to 200 feet and deeper in some conditions so it is OK for the salt only 10% of the time.

another couple of questions....

HDS 7 Gen2 Touch

1. I looked at the owner's manual online and could not find what type and size Scandisk card is recommended (for updates and storing data); is it a standard size Scandisk card or micro?

2. What fishing maps are recommended for my fishing areas? Does the HDS 7 come preloaded with any fishing maps? Are they as good as some of the after market vendors such as Navionics Hot Maps Platinum?

Thanks!

1. I'm not sure there is a limit, just buy what you feel is reasonably priced.

2. The built in maps are "ok" but Navionics are much more detailed. Example: Navionics shows several humps in lakes I frequent that are not represented in the built-in maps on my HDS 7 Gen 2 touch.

Any aftermarket chip you purchase will have different mapping and possibly more detailed mapping than that which is preloaded into the units. The best choice I have found is to subscribe to Insight Genesis on the Lowrance site so you can do your own survey of the bottom while fishing and get 1 foot contour line charts for your fishing areas. The subscription for one year with unlimited downloads is about the same price as one "Chip" you would purchase where you don't know when or how the survey was done. When you upload your own sonar logs, the survey was done by you!

So, what about scandisk question....

Is their a scan disk recommendation (size and type) from Lowrance on the 7" Gen2 Touch?

I know that in my elite 7 the manual stated a min size for upgrading software

Thanks

When you go to the Lowrance website and look at the software update you are going to load, check out the size of the file and make sure you have a card with enough room to load the update.

I think the units today can read 8 gig cards and bigger.
