hds5 question

Post by lfg »

I have an hds5 that came with the boat i purchased used. how do i know if it is a gen 1 or a gen 2. I'm pretty sure its a gen 1 but with no indication on the unit and with no manual its difficult to tell. Also i like to turn the battery's off on the boat, Is this why i lose the time data overlay. Probably silly questions but would appreciate some help

An easy way to determine if you have a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Key Pad unit is to look at the Lowrance logo at the top / front of the unit above the screen. If Lowrance is Blue in color, you have a Gen 1 HDS unit. If the word Lowrance is white in color, you have a Gen 2 HDS Key Pad unit.

Hard to say why the digital Time overlay data disappears. One thing is the way you may be turning off the HDS unit. To do this correctly, when the unit is on and you are ready to turn it off, press the Power key. In the dialog box that appears you will see that Standby is highlighted, use your arrow keys to highlight Power Off and then hit Enter.

This will power down the unit the proper way. All the programs running will shut down and the unit will power off.

NEVER press and hold the Power key to shut off any HDS unit. This is the same as shutting down the main power while the units are still on. The software in the HDS units like to shut down properly just like you do when you power down your laptop or desktop computer at home. Software likes to be put to sleep happy, killing the power instantly makes software unhappy and you will see lots of weird things happen to the operation of the HDS unit if you don't shut them down properly.

Also, go to www.lowrance.com and check to see if there is a newer version of software available for your unit on the lowrance website. If there is, update your unit. This will fix lots of unseen and known issues and keep your HDS unit operating properly.

Thanks for the reply. I might have misled you in my question on the time . The overlay data is still on the screen, but the time overlay is blank. meaning that it shows no time(it reads - - - -) but the overlay word " time" is still there. I shut the unit down correctly but then when i get home and put the boat up i disconnect the battery, not only to the graphs but to the whole boat (power disconnect at the battery) My thought was that when i turn the battery back on to the boat(thereby also the graphs) and then turn the unit back on, the gps side of the graph would aquire the time when it aquires the sats. and then the time would be there for the time overlay data.

Your expectations are correct. When the unit gets a GPS lock, the time along with your location should be acquired. I don't know why it won't respond. Get someone in your boat to look at your unit. As someone who knows these units goes through the menu settings and putting overlay data on and deleting and back on each screen, sometimes they can find something that is causing your issue.
