Project Fact Sheet

What is the State Route 120/James E. Roberts Memorial Bridge Project
The James E. Roberts Memorial Bridge was built in 1970 and is on State Route 120 in Tuolumne County. It spans Don Pedro Reservoir and is a popular route for the 4 million visitors who annually enter Yosemite National Park, where iconic Half Dome rises 4,800 feet above the Yosemite Valley floor. The project will provide a new bridge deck and railimgs, strengthen the existing girders, improve the bridge's seismic strength and reduce the need for frequent repairs.

What is included in the project?
Planned improvements include the following major components:

** Replace the bridge deck and railings; map

** Strengthen the existing girders;

** Provide a seismic retrofit for the structure.

What are the goals of the project:

** Eliminate inconsistent roadway surface conditions;

** Provide a modern and safe bridge for vehicles and bicycles;

** Put an end to frequent minor deck repair projects;

** Stop exposing maintenance personnel to safety risks;

** Extend service life of the bridge an additional 40 years.

Why is this project needed?
Yosemite National Park plays a critical role in the economy of Tuolumne County, as it is the northwest gateway into the expansive national park. The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of the bridge; enhance safety; increase capacity and improve traffic operations; and provide a transportation facility consistent with local, regional and statewide plans, and Caltrans’ standards.

The road across the Dam from Blue Oaks to Flemming Medows is closed until Aug. Blue Oaks ramp is open and in good condition. Lake is fairly free of debris.
