Ice off at Moses Lake

Post by ttb31183 »

Each year Moses Lake turns out big bass very early in the season. Late February and early March is when the big smallmouth really start to feed up. Because of this, anglers in eastern Washington usually catch their first bass of the year there right after the ice melts. This year the Spokane Bass Club decided to schedule an event there on March 18th. Unfortunately, it was canceled due to ice on the lake. It was an unusually long winter and everything is pushed back this season.

This picture was just two weeks ago. I tested the ice thickness by throwing large rocks on the ice and they just skipped across it. It was thick!

The club tournament was called off but most of the ice melted that weekend and anglers still caught some nice smallmouth. The lake is fairly shallow and warms up fairly quickly so the fish were on the feed even when part of the lake had ice on it. Two Spokane area anglers David Slater and Noah Whitten were able to catch these nice ones. Other pictures from more anglers showed the fishing was pretty good on Sunday and most of the fish were caught on crankbaits.

For the next month or so, Moses Lake is the place to be.
