nav sharing elite

Post by gomester »

Lowrance elite question (does anybody here know): I have an elite 7 chirp on the console and an elite 5 dsi on the bow (both with gps but only the one with nav chip). If I replaced the one on the bow with another chirp model of either the elite chirp 5 or 7 and installed an nmea 2000 network, I understand I can share waypoints if both units are powered on at the time the waypoint is marked but can I also share the nav chip across both units or do i need another nav chip?

The Elite models are not designed to be networked together. The HDS units are able to be networked. This explains the difference in the price points in each product line.

No offense but your response is not accurate. Either you did not read my entire post or spit out a generic answer once you saw the word "Elite" in my post. I got my answer from another source. The Elite chirp takes a NMEA 2000 network so yeah they can be networked together. My question was not if they can be networked together and to push towards an HDS model but if you can share the nav chip. Saying the models cannot be networked is false and completely misleading. I am only responding so others get the correct information; that is what I come to this forum for. Not meaning to rant but just get the correct answers in case somebody else is curious about the same thing.

You CAN network the Elite hdi and Elite chirp with an NMEA 2000 network. You CANNOT share nav chips. You CAN share waypoints if both units are on.
Ethernet is needed to share map chips and only available on Gen and Gen 3 HDS models.
Also, to share waypoints you need to have both units on at the time you mark the waypoint on one unit in order for it to show on the other unit.

The older Elite DSI (not hdi and not chirp models) do not have the NMEA 2000 capability or the ability to share waypoints.

Again, this was not to bash anybody but simply to get the correct info out which I hope is appreciated and utilized in the future.

If I am completely incorrect then I got incorrect information from another source and please correct me after confirming.

Thanks.

My apologies. I did miss interpret your question. No map card sharing except in HDS units via the Ethernet network with the new update. Sorry for any misinformation I may have passed along.

No problem. Just wanted to make sure the correct information was passed along. That is why people come to the forum. Always a learning curve :).

Thanks for taking my comment in the way it was intended; for us all to learn how these sometimes complicated devices work.

Have a great day.
