Jig tying vise advice

Post by Mort »

I am looking for an affordable vise so I can try my hand at tying my own jigs. I saw this one at Bass Pro Shops and did not know if anyone has had any luck with it or something similar?

Thanks for any input,

Marty

I will check there. What type of thread do you like to use?

Alright Mark,
How do you tie the jigs to make 'em puff like that, what is the trick.
I have tried with tying in layers and then forcing the strands in opposite directions. That makes em puffy-er, but it doesn't hold a candle to your ties.
Most of the time I tie a very tight and narrow thread collar, and that results in a nice flared profile, but like I said, its not puffy.

Don't know if this is a trade secret, but I thought I'd try to get some help.

Thanks,

LOL JIGS...maybe If I start tying my own I won't obsess so much about fishing (yeah right). It will be fun to try though.

I use a gorilla vise. table top version. Cheap and has worked for 10 years. for the thread I use old braid prefferably the thinner you have.
I have my own version of the puffball(not nearly as puffy though) that i tie. I will notpost it here because of the respect i have for Mark but if you want to bounce some ideas around about just tying in general pm me and we can talk.

Great jig that puffball of Mark's though!

MCS,

Hey, I thought that I was the only one that knew the "secret" color for spots was cinnamon!!! That was supposed to be my "ace" for our monthly club tournament this weekend!!! Oh well, I'll have to use one of my other "secrets" now.

I save my old braid. The thinner diameters work best and i can pull then as tight as i possibly can and not have anything break. Although if you use to thin of a diameter it cuts the skirt material if pulled too tight. I have found i like 20lb test power pro as an all around so far. I would think that dental floss would also cut the skirt material. You could use the flat stuff but that would bunch up the skirt material and not give a good puff! Owell just my 2c!

MARK, DON'T YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE VISE WILL OPEN UP TO ACOMODATE AT LEAST A 6/0 MUSTAD HOOK ?? ADJUSTABLE TYPE ?
VISE.........LIKE THE ONE I USE FOR SPINNERBAITS, PROBABLY THE SAME VISE ?? I USE BIG FLY THREAD SIZE (B).
