Trailer for football/casting jig

Post by Micropterus salmoides »

I'm looking for an alternative trailer for football/casting jigs. I know a lot of anglers like double tail grubs, but wonder if something else would work better in cold water. Possibly pork or another type of plastic trailer. I'm not fishing in a clear water reservoir where many anglers throw football/casting jigs, but I am fishing rocky cover with scattered wood in 5-15 ft of water. Sometimes 20+ ft deep, but not as often. Water clarity is 2.5-3 ft max, but usually 1- 2 ft. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Pork is tried and true in you situation. Zoom brush hogs are pretty sweet aswell.

I use the Yum chunk plastic or the zoom. But if it is small mouth or the spotted bass that like to tear them apart, I use uncle josh pork. Pork is better when the water gets colder.

Super Pork..........

Post by D.B.COOPER »

Try a black and blue and purple(tri color) Skinny Bear football jig with a black and blue (shadow) piece of Super Pork. I like to slide a piece of a Yamamoto 5 inch grub up the shank to keep the pork from sliding down the shank. Just cut off a little above the tail and thread on the body part of the grub. 214 color grub is the only color I use with this set up. It works anywhere. You can't beat Super Pork in cold water. Size pork varies on water clarity. Bubba, Senior, or Frog. I mostly use Senior. My other color is Brown and Orange barbwire Skinny Bear football with the 180 grub color and the plain ol brown pork. These are the only things you will need for jig fishing in cold water. Just two colors and build up your confidence in them. Just keep it simple like Cooch says. D.B.COOPER 8)

Try one of the bigger Panic Minnows. They have quite a bit of tail action on a football, and don't roll over. Nice change from the regular trailer........

Come winter time I prefer a large bulky trailer

Super Pork Frog
Sweetbeaver
Paca Craw\Chunk
5" Hula Grub

I will still use the double tail grubs however, I fish a heavy jig and the added bulk of the above baits - paca chunk slow the jigs vertical decent and still gives me solid bottom contact. Experiment with what works for you. I know that for me December marks the month that Black N Blue\ Brown Purple kicks in - however with the lack of cold weather so far this year it may be a little too early

I use the dbl. tails, pork and then the Robo Kickin Craw in Peoples Choice, it's a brown / purple two tone. They have GREAT action, even when the water gets COLD.
Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

Jigs has got it pegged, Strike King 3x Chunk Jr. Great trailer for the smaller "lake" jigs. Also the pork would be a good choice, maybe a Superpork Frog Jr. or an Uncle Josh 101 spin frog (its the smallest one)

Another good trailer is the Berkley Sabertail Bug or a 3" Berkley Beast, both have good action and powerbait flavor.

Cold water and pork, just like peas and carrots!

I agree with lugnut on the Roboworm Kickin Craw also. It is my second choice along with Berkleys new chunky trailer, it is kinda like Paca chunk.
