Lowrance 522 ?s

Post by Scott L »

I am considering a Lowrance 522. Should be the same as the more common 520 except it has an internal antenna for the gps.

The unit will not be mounted in the console, but next to it on a RAM or equivalent. Has anyone had any difficulty receiving sat. signals with the 522 mounted outside of a console?

I have a lowrance ifinderH20C that seems to locate satelites okay, but long ago I had heard complaints.

The unit comes with a transom transducer. Does anyone with a glass bass boat use one or should I purchase a shoot thru the hull as well?

Thanks for any and all assistance/opinions.

I found that it needs to be at not too much of an angle and its fine but if you try to use it up front where it nedds to lay kinda flat it looses signal a lot....

The 522's are a discontinued product, If you have the extra money spend it on HDS7 or 8 insight USA'

Thanks for the replies guys. I realize the 520-522 are discontined, that's why their discounted to the mid $400 range vs the new HD 5 running another $100 more than the old msrp of the 520's (+/-$750). I can't justify the $750 price for a 5" unit.

From most of the replies it sounds like if I keep the unit relatively vertical near the console the internal antenna should work.

Should I pick up a shoot thru the hull transducer? It comes with the transom skimmer transducer. Don't know anyone that has used the transom skimmer transducer on a fiberglass boat.

Thanks again.
