Dropping water levels at Folsom Lake also have dragged down the speed limit for vessels cruising the reservoir.

State park officials announced that boats can travel no faster that 5 mph, a limit instituted because lakebed rocks have emerged due to the low water level.

"This is standard operating procedure when the lake level drops below 400 feet (elevation)," said Ted Jackson, Folsom Lake superintendent.

Four out of the five boat ramps at the lake are high and dry. Granite Bay, Folsom Point, Rattlesnake Bar and Peninsula are out of the water and closed to boat launching.

Boaters can expect delays at the only remaining ramp operating at Browns Ravine. Day-use picnic areas remain open, but it's a long walk to the water's edge.

Last year, the temporary 5 mph limit was instituted in late July.
