Whats your Favorite Chatterbait trailers and size?
Hey guys, just want to see what kind of chatterbaits you guys are throwing, weight size & trailer to it, I'd like to try something different.
I throw revenge chatterbaits & the org. chatterbait (yes, Still gets bit lol) with a white Super Fluke as my trailer or a basstrix I usually like the 1/2 oz size/weight. As for color for some reason I shy away from the dark colors, All white or White/Chartreuse. Braid with 10 or 12lb fluorocarbon liter. Retrive: Slow roll it back; Slow roll & sometimes a sudden jerk and kill, or a burn/jerkbait retrieve when they are busting on the surface.
Is anyone using Trailer hooks on their chatterbaits ? If so which one? I was watching the bass masters at the delta and seen that guy whackin em on the chatterbait with the trailer hook. I seem to lose a few at the boat on the org. chatterbait, gotta sharpen that hook once in a while.
You guys prefer the white baits or the darker color baits? A green chatterbait w/ gold blade with a matching swimsenko sounds pretty deadly to me... Man I gotta get out on the lake LOL
Whats your guy's input's??

I don't toss a ton of chatterbaits, but I agree with your setup....white flukes or grubs on white lures...in stainaed water or at night then black. I wouldn't be afrfaid of the heavier ones either. A gamgatsu trailer hook.... small or short..I forget the number.

John I don't know if your doing it, but a chatter bait is basicly a jig that swims (this is a givin) but when you fish a normal jig one of the first things you do is spread the hook a little-- I do the same thing to the chatterbait, --I very rearly lose a fish.
I perfer the 1/8 and 1/4 oz chatterbaits I fish the heavyer ones in heavy grass
speaking of 1/8 oz chatter bait does anyone know who makes a quality 1/8 oz chatter bait the ones from the orginal company have very crappy hooks?

Yup, either a swimming senko (cut down to size) or 5 inch Yamamoto single trail grub as trailers. Although I'll bet a Netbait Paca Craw would be a good choice also.

1/4 oz Gambler Swimblade.
Trailers: either a 3x Denny Brauer Chunk or a 3" Lake Fork swimbait.
I gotta experiment with 3" and 4" Big Hammers, so don't try those till I do

reaction innovations skinny dipper works great.... also the D&M spinnerbait trailers work great.... I like a smaller trailer for lakes and bigger for the delta and clear lake.

I throw 1/2 and 3/4 oz that are made by a guy that I found on eBay (seller id = mnfishing). He makes them in a variety of sizes (3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 oz) and colors. Uses 5/0 hook, Luck "E" Strike Clunn Trailers and puts reflective tape on the blade. He sells them auction style. The bidding normally starts at $10.95 per 3 or you can buy it at $12.95. He has free shipping.
I like the light colors too and had him custom make me a bunch with skirts in white, chartruese/white, white w/red highlights, and white w/silver highlights. The first trip out using his jigs, my cousins and I caught over 10 bass. Those Luck "E" strike trailers can take a beating.
I like to swim them over weedbeds so I use 50 lb braid. My largest bass on a chatter type bait is 6+ lbs, but I've caught stripers on them too (largest 15 lbs).
I also like to use Yamamoto 3 1/2 inch Kut Tail trailer in either red (008) or red/black w/silver (922) with my chatter type baits and spinnerbaits.

I have been experimenting with a Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper cut down a bit. Any opinions? Very new to chatterbaits, but the Revenge Bluegill looks awsome. I put a sprayed grass skinny dipper on it. Love the way it looks, now I just have to fish it.
I have adopted Gary Kleins trailer hook philosophy. Go small. He uses a #1 siwash hook and lets it swing freely. This has worked well for me. Still stays very weedless coming through the tules.

I know you are but what am I?
Re: Whats your Favorite Chatterbait trailers and size?
I have had great results with a 4" ringworm as a trailer. I cut off the head about half an inch. Salt and pepper chartreuse tail is good in clear water on white baits. I throw black with a chartreuse tail at night on a black bait. I always use a 1/0 trailer hook. Lost fish is way too common without a trailer hook. The bait's erratic movement can cause fish to not get the bait just right.

Are you bending the jig hook to the side a little with a slight angle? kind of makes it like a circle hook. I did that with my hudd rof 16s and it worked for me. Good idea...jrbasspro wrote:John I don't know if your doing it, but a chatter bait is basicly a jig that swims (this is a givin) but when you fish a normal jig one of the first things you do is spread the hook a little-- I do the same thing to the chatterbait, --I very rearly lose a fish.
