HDS 7 Cutting Out

Post by mmalinao »

Hey guys,
I just installed an HDS7 on the consule and I'm having a power issue and wanted to see if anyone else has experinced this.

I had an LCX 18c that I replaced with the HDS 7 and I noticed that when I hold the trim up/down continuously the unit powers off. Right after the hole shot and I'm trimming the voltage guage goes from 14v down to 12v and then the unit cuts out.

The battery is brand new and I never had this issue with the previous finder.

Any suggestions? Is it the wiring? There's only 2 wires that go to the battery so it's somehow connected to the main power switch.

Thanks,

Mike

That sounds like a low power issue. Somehow there must be a dip in the voltage while you trim. It may be a loose wire somewhere that is creating a dip in power instead of a surge in power. This might take a while to check the power and ground wires to the unit and any other connections to and from the power switch and/or batteries. I'll ask around and if I come up with anything else I'll get back to you here.

I have heard of this before and the 3.5 update should address the it. Your issue was a little different since it happened when you used the trim. The few other issues I heard of were when they started the boat the units would turn off.

Make sure your HDS 7 has the 3.5 update in it.

If you are going to be at C & C Marine on Thursday bring the unit in and I will update it for you. I will have HDS update chips with me.

Hi Ken,
I run 2 HDS5's, and mine does the same thing on take off as I trim up, the units cut out. I dont turn off the front unit but I put it in power save mode when I am on the big motor. It only happens once in a while but its kinda a pain when I am running and the unit is rebooting, I can't see the bottom or GPS until the system reboots. I have a brand new XHD-24m interstate when it is fully charged its at 12.8v. I ran a battery test once when it happened and the surface charge was still a 12.73 after the unit cut out. I am no where near C&C how can I update my units?

To update you HDS units go to www.lowrance.com click on "Downloads", then click on "Product Software Updates", scroll down the list to "All HDS units" and click on this link. Here is where you will find the instructions on how to download the update.

When you have the update on a multimedia card, start with your unit off and insert the card in the slot. Then turn the unit on and the update will load automatically. When the update is in the message on the screen will prompt you to remove the card and press and hold the power key until the blue screen with the Lowrance logo appears and the unit will continue to boot up and you are done.

Once you have done it or seen it done updating your unit will get easier and easier.

After checking with the staff at Lowrance, the issue of the units turning off when another device is activated, like a trim switch that requires power or sometimes when the boat is started the units will turn off, this is either a low voltage problem or a connection problem in the wiring somewhere and not necessarily the wiring to the unit itself. This can be difficult to diagnose but will need to be addressed.
