What Did I Catch

Post by Wolfeman »

Got a pan fish on Saturday in the Delta. It hit a 5" inch Yamamoto craw, which was almost as long as the fish.

I wasn't sure what it was. It had the side markings of a crappie, but the big, fat, belly was bright orange. Tried to take a pic but the camera was acting up.

Any idea what it was?
Thanks,

Gator,
That wasn't it. Just the very bottom of the belly was orange, and the markings on the sides where more crappie-like than bluegill, sunfish.

I am betting it was a Sacramento Perch. there are still a few left in the Delta and every once in a while one surfaces.

Funny. I typed 'warmouth' into a search engine and got 'warmouth bass' and clicked on that and got a page for bass guitars made by the Warmouth company.

But I also did find one link that had a picture and it's pretty close.

I've been catching a few of those also on or near beds. Short strikers, had to bite worm in half to catch one, then it's on.

Hub, How the heck are you?

That's not it. The orange belly was behind the bottom fins.
And the the snout wasn't as pronounced.

This is the half-fishass picture I was able to get.
Notice that the side looks very crappie-like.
On the Warmouth site they indicate a much higher water-temp range than the Delta has.
But who knows.

Thick as a brick and like I said before the belly was crazy swollen.
What was most impressive was that it hit a Yamamoto 5" Craw that I had nipped off the last inch of the tail end. How the thing thought it was going to get that big piece of meat into it's mouth was beyond belief. Survival of the fittest is alive and well out there in the Delta.

It was probably sitting on the bed and thought the craw was an egg-eater and it was an aggression attack as opposed to an eating attack.

Would have loved to have taken it home to my backyard pond, but hey, that's illegal.

Looks like a warmouth to me . Ive caught lots of them in Discovery Bay and around Holland . Had one in a aquarium years ago, very agressive. The mouth is more like a bass then a perch or bluegill.

Final concensus....It was a Warmouth.

Based on what 'clearlakeoutdoors' posted about getting them in Disco and near Holland (which is where I caught mine), and all the online pix I've been able to find it seems like that's what it was.

Thanks for everyone's help. The site does have it's moments.

Nope. Didn't get that one. He didn't say anything about you being there either. Smack him for me the next time you see him.
Maybe we could get Westernbass.com to have a 'Rally At Clearlake' and we could all get together again.
Whoops. Hijack my own thread.

Did you end up getting a different boat somewhere else..Kap and I have been fishing the WRL..So far we haven't done all that well for any tournament, but we are having a ton of fun trying..Drop either Kap or myself a PM, and see if we can't get together to wet a line or two..I am all for another Rally or even another Nutcase event..
