Last weekend the Top Stick Joes and CFF affiliated club the California Bass Contenders held their final event of their 12 month schedule at Lake Havasu with a two day tournament. The effects of the slow economy were evident when only 14 anglers from their 40 man roster showed for the blast off.

Top honors for the two day event went to none other than the Owner of Gee Gee Bait Company Ray Vella with a respectable 26lbs of green and black bass. Ray will be crowned as the California Bass Contenders Angler of the Year later this year at the Bass Contender annual banquet. Ray placed in the top ten in every tournamnet event this year winning several of the events on his own baits. Second place went to Joe 'V' Vermilyer with 24.5lbs and Bill Layne came in third with 24.3lbs. It should be noted that Joe 'V' also had Big Boat for both days with his co angler and drop shot king Alfred vasquez. The average weight for each of the 120 fish caught at this event was a very respectable 2.15lbs per fish. According to the anglers the bite was as good as it could get on Saturday and a bit slower on Sunday due to the huge amount of pressure put on from the big tournament on Saturday.

Next on the schedule for the California Bass Contenders is the California Delta April 4th through April 11th. I can gaurantee that the economy will not effect this one because who cares how much it will cost to catch all the giants you can in a week at one of the nations best fisheries around??
