Congratulations Big Ed Cazaras and Vince Perkins

Post by John Barron »

When is the last time you heard that Pyramid was 98 digress? High skies and high temperature made fishing a little different Saturday when the Top Stick Joes showed up for the Battle on the Grapevine, the third event in the series of season. The only saving grace was the gusting winds to help cool things down and heat up the fishing.

As the weigh in neared Cazaras and Perkins came to the scales an hour early because Big Ed had a family commitment in the Inland Empire and had to leave. They asked me to call them later and let them know where they finished. Big Ed was hoping to at least be in the top five for those important points for the end of the AOY race but also for the Affiliated Club points. As it turns out Cazaras and Perkins did make the top 5 as a matter of fact they won. Since they were not there for the awards I took home $538 and 1st place wood. :D We will have to wait for Big Ed to post to get what they were doing to catch their fish.

2nd place went to the biggest threat to win any time we visit Pyramid, Steve Iwashita and Edgar Uyema. No matter what lake they show up at they always seem to do well. They went home with $375.

3rd place worth $313 was captured by Jim Basham and Dave Cunningham. Jim and Dave were leading the point’s race after Piru but we will have to see how the positions hold up after I shake out the Pyramid results.

First big fish was caught first thing in the morning by Ron Lacari on a SPRO Frog tipping the scales at 7.10#

2nd big fish became a drama. Shane and Dennis Morgan weighed in their 3.70# fish just before Mark Bowman and Mario Ringo weighed in their 3.70 pounder. When the 2nd Big Fish award weight was announced both teams stepped forward trying to claim the prize. It was obvious that a fight was about to start. It appeared that the Battle on the Grapevine was starting to turn into a cage match instead of a fishing derby.

Mark "The Bruiser" Bowman and Mario "The Masher" Ringo squared off with "Palmdale Shane" and Dennis "Monster" Morgan. When some one in the crowd yelled "Let's get it on" I decided I better step in. I didn't want to see any of these guys have to tap out so we decided to flip a coin. Shane and Dennis won the toss and ended up with the check. Mark and Mario may have lost the coin toss but they won eh coin I used to flip with! They also won an option.

All teams weighed in fish. 69 fish were weighed in for a total weight of 145.83# for an average fish weight of 2.11# each.

Next up The Clash At Castaic in June. Watch for announcements on California fishing forums

I apologize for not having the results up last night. By the time I got home was in so much pain Mrs jb had to help me put the boat away. Man am I grateful she has stuck with me inspite of me.

I go in Wednesday for a two hour procedure that is supposed to relieve the pressure and remove the pain. While my Doctor is one of the best in the country Kaiser Permenante is not known to have the best survival rates  so I hope to talk to ou guys on Thursday!

Well i asked Ray El if it would be okay to weigh in as early as possible because i had a family reunion type of party in Upland. My family was actually a little bit pissed off at me because to them i was putting fishing before the family. I explained to them its not just fishing its alot more than that.... Sheesh, They just dont get it!

We had no idea of how our sack was going to fair in the weigh in so when we heard the news later that afternoon we were both surprised and exstatic. Ive got to tell you, my partner Vince is truly a blessing. He has only been bass fishing now for a year and has made strides far beyond what anybody would expect. Id like to Thank Vince for are hard fought battle!

Here is how we did it: In practice last Friday we sucked bigtime. The wind was blowing and we couldnt get on any type of a pattern what soever. We did manage some fish in practice along side of the weed lines but most of them were dinks. The couple that we did catch in the boulders were chunks and we knew they were the type of tournament fish we needed. So we started out in the weed lines for nothing in the first hour. I told Vince thats it dude, we are abandoning our grass fish and concentrating on the boulder fish. We had 5 spots we found deep water access with absolutly no grass and bigtime boulders all around. We would rape each spot for one fish here and on fish there. We kept going from spot #1 to spot #2 then #3 and so on. After that back to spot #1 and then through the rest and over again. I think by the time one spot was piliged it would have enough time to rebound by the time we got back to rape the females all over again. It was descent enough to produce 9-10 keepers and thats how we did it. It was a hard rock/no grass/deep water pattern that was holding fish that wanted to eat the jig pretty good. We noticed these fish were spitting up crawdad peices so we stayed with the jigs and it held up solid. I was amazed on how many craw peices came out of these fish. They were gorged full of red crawdads.

Man, what an awesome time we had with beautifull weather and real down to earth participants. I thanked Ray El and JB before Vince and i left for running such an awesome event circuit that for me has been way different from the rest. I feel like this style of fishing only promotes the good that can come from competitive fishing and keeps out the bad stuff that occurs at many of the other circuits around the state. Ive been fishing the club circuit for a couple of years now and am having agreat time. I appreciate all of the hard work from the JB, Ray and the staff of the Top Stick Joes! See you guys at Castaic!

I heard that photos were taken of the top three with their trophies and JB and Ron stepped in and posed with their big hairy stomaches showing and puffed their cheeks full of air posing as myself and my partner?? Hmm, well i got news for you two, im not sure if was neccessary for you two skinny guys as slim as you are to need to have to puff up your bellies and cheeks for the pictures if you were posing for us but thanks for the effort and making us feel like we were there!

Later; Big Ed!

Great story Ed.
I am very happy for you and your partner. Hard work does pay off. I hope the win made up for your family being mad at you.

Y'know my boat ran like crap both in practice and in the tournament. It just felt sluggish and lazy.

Im sure the 4200' elevation can make your outboard perform a bit different but did anybody else experience the same?? Im just curious if other boaters have noticed that at high altitudes like Pyramid the motor will run different?? Hopefully its not something else.

My boat wasn't so much sluggish it just didn't jump out of the hole like normal. I'm sure it was the elevation.

Er..., ah...., Pyramid's surface elevation is: 2,580 ft; approximately 1,000 more than Castaic. Just FYI.
hmmmmmmmm..........maybe it was the additional dead weight I had in my boat then........

JB;

Im glad to hear your are doing well and everything went good with your procedure! As far as ever receiving another award that probably will not happen but if we get lucky again i would be proud for a triple camel toe/neck roll fumunda cheese packer and a hard nippled cop to stand in for me anytime.

Hey,...... Sorry i didnt tell you sooner but can you check and see if the Dr put in the extra stitch i paid him for in the middle camel toe?
