Swamped see picture below

Post by John Barron »

While fishing near Little Gyp Beds I spotted this boat on the bank. I did not have my camera with me so I took the picture with my phone.

Apparently this Skeeter was abandoned early as the running lites were still in so I'm assuming they had not reached their first spot. All the electronics were still on as well. This picture was taken on Monday so I'm guessing that it was a team that fished ABA that weekend.

When I got to Callville on Sunday the Red flag with the black square was flying. The guys at the marina told me that this flag had not been flown more than 3 times in the last thirty years. The wind was blowing so hard that day you couldn't even launch.

Monday the wind calmed down enough to go out and fish. My son lives in Henderson and had the day off on Monday and went fishing with me. We did not catch many fish but we had a great time just hanging out. We talk often but don't get to just hang out very often. It was a good day.

Tuesday went out by myself, still some wind but not much, ran up to the Virgin Basin and started there and worked my way back. I fished the pockets and the slides. I found a fish here and there, pretty much scattered. I developed that further the next day. As I went to the spots and checked I got bit about half a dozen times but did not swing on the fish.

I gotta say I was little nervous which is not like me. I did feel if I had a little luck I could put 5 fish in the boat and felt that would keep me in the hunt. I got to my first spot and did not catch a fish. I moved to my second spot and third cast I hooked up with a one pounder. OK I'm in good shape it's 8 oclock and I have one fish in the box with plenty of time to get the other four.

I head to spot number three and of all people Mike Hart is sitting on it so I keep going to spot number four. OK spot number four has Dale Jennings sitting on it. He told me later that he caught a fish right after I left. As I got to spot five another boat was just pulling off so I decide to start my run over and see if I could get the rest of my fish.

Nothing not another bite the rest of the day.

Day two started with absolutely no wind, flat calm and glass. The least condusive conditions to gin clear water. I decided to try my milk run again or at least start on spot one. Ten minutes into the day and on my first spot I'm on and put a pound and a half fish in the boat...yeah!

Second spot I get bit and broke off. Not good but I know I need some luck because I was fishing some extremely rocky stuff and my line was getting frayed pretty bad. That was to no avail. The next cast I was on with a keeper and he breaks me off. Two casts later I'm on again and now I'm praying for the fish to stay on. Unfortunately no one was listening because the fish broke me off again.

The rest of the day went that way, a few more bites and no more fish in the boat. I decided to weigh in my one fish, go to my room and clean up. I figured I could go into the Casino and drowned my sorrows in alcohol. I needed some mindless distraction from my less than stellar performance so I started playing a non thinking game.......3 card poker. I realized about a dozen hands into the game I had won 5 in a row. I raised my next bet and hit a 3 of a kind which paid 30 to 1 $450 in my pocket.........

I will not complain about the tough time I had after seeing that sunken Skeeter and the kind of day he had. All in all I had a good time visiting my son, daughter-in-law and grandkids especially the part where Daman and I went fishing. I look forward to fishing with him again.

Try this. Like I said I took the picture with my phone and it does not take the best picstures unless you are close up. The water may look calm but it was still blowing and we couldn't get any closer without the danger of getting washed ashore ourselves.
