HDS5 Gen2 Nautic Insight?

Post by bobsquatch13 »

I am thinking about buying this unit with "puck" style shoot thru hull transducer. I fish with my boat exclusively on the Calif. Delta waters out of Russo's, Orwood or Ladd's marina's. I am trying to find out if buying this HDS unit with the Nautic Insight will allow me full working /mapping conditions for use on the Calif. Delta waters. Have not put my boat in any lakes in last couple of years and not likely to. Go with tournament partner in his boat if fishing on the lakes. I really don't want to have to purchase the Navionics HotMaps Premium West if not needed? Just want to be able to use the unit on the Calif. Delta and am hoping if I buy with the Nautic Insight instead of the Lake Insight this will work? If not, what are suggestions that I would have to get keeping in mind not interested in spending any more than I have to? Thanks

The Nautic Insight is perfect for the Cal Delta. It's all I use. No other mapping is needed. Either the puck style or the skimmer style transducer will work at speed. Either type of ducer can be glued into the inside of the bilge area. The puck style ducer has a flat bottom and is easier to place in the bottom of the boat but you can glue in a skimmer and get the same performance. Both ducers have identical interior components, it's just the encasement that is different. Both transducers will give you a reading, each ducer needs to have clean contact with the body of water either hanging off the transom via a mounting bracket or glued into the inside of a fiberglass boat using a two part epoxy. Ask any dealer in your area for tips if needed.

Thanks...as soon as I figure out which of the 2 puck style transducers already in the bilge is for the currently used in dash flasher, the other being for the original Pinpoint graph which I never used after I bought the boat almost five years ago. Both are puck style with one being about half again bigger than the other one. The smaller of the two looks like the puck style transducer I installed on my trolling motor for a HDS5-X in July last year. I need to find out which transducer to remove, making sure it is not the one to the in dash flasher, as want to put the new puck style transducer in that spot. Not enough cable play to be able to tell which one go's to the flasher or to where the Pinpoint was, so still have to decide which is the right one to remove. Thanks again for your help.
