The Do Nothing Congress: Who's Really to Blame?

Nothing Doing on Either Side of the Aisle

Over the past two years, the American people have heard about the "Do Nothing" Republican Congress. But do you notice that those calling the congress "do nothing" only mention the House of Representatives? There is rarely any mention of the Democrat-run Senate, which has slammed multiple versions of the House budget. On top of that, the Senate has not released a budget of their own in over forty months -- way before the Republicans took over half of one third of the three branches of government.

The Way it Was Meant to Be

Since the Republicans took over the house they have had to take a stance of opposition. Our founding fathers broke the government into three separate branches because they did not want a repeat of the tyranny that they saw under King George III. Instead, to pass any form of legislation, Congress and the President are both needed.

Go It Alone

When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, the Democrats not only won the presidency but also increased their majorities in the House and Senate. The majority they achieved in the Senate then became a super majority once Saturday Night Live alumnus Al Franken was certified as the Senator of Minnesota. This means that the Democrats had a filibuster-proof majority and that they did not need Republicans to do anything.

Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

When Obama took office his first policy initiative did nothing for the economy and job creation. Instead Obama and the Democrats focused on bills such as the Stimulus, Obamacare and Cap and Trade. Not one of those bills had much input from Republicans. When Republicans wanted to talk about it on the Senate floor the Democrats would end discussion. The unified Democrat government increased spending and government so much that they lost control of the House and lost six senate seats because the American public wanted them to stop Obama and the Democrat agenda.

The Power of Nothing

Despite the huge loss that the Democrats suffered, their mentality has still not changed. Whether it's the attempt of the President to increase entitlements or calling for higher taxes, the President still wants to spend! If he shows no effort to compromise. Is it not the Republicans' job to do what they were elected to do? Think about it, if someone puts the lower half of your body in battery acid, you will not feel better by then putting all of your body into it. Until we get a new president the best thing for them to do is nothing.
