Get to Go to Clear Lake!!

Post by speedo »

Lots of Clear Lake questions!

Last minute opportunity to fish Clear Lake for the first time. Going to be there Thursday through Saturday. Buddy has meeting in Ukiah on Friday, so I may fish alone or check out a guide for 1/2 day.

Lodging - Need dock and launching, and not too far from Ukiah. Any suggestions in the Lakeport area? Lucern, Nice? Others? Any feedback on Skylark Shores in Lakeport?

Fishing - Oroville is home lake, and I'm usually constrained by the limits of my "bass rig," so I fish lots of plastics and some jigs, darters, etc. Rarely do any reaction fishing. Besides heavier line, (I use 6# to 12# on Oro.) any general suggestions for presentations, colors?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but thanks for any information.

P.S. We're not taking my "bass rig"! Buddy has a 22' Fish Rite we're towing.

Ive fished clear lake a hand full of times and had pretty good trips out there. First off bring a dropshot rod with a little more back bone than you'd want on oroville and some fuscha thunder roboworms with 10-12lb test fluro...may sound stupid for some but Ive had good results. Secondly carolina rig! I rig mine with tungsten weights a glass bead and a McCoy stopper as for what plastic to put on your hook I suggest big Yamamoto kut tails in june bug watermellon and green pumpkin some Zoom lizards in the same colors and some dead ringers same colors. Bring some bright baits including odd color jigs and plastics just in case you get into some bed fishing. As for docks and lodging I dont know Ive only done day trips up there so far. Hope this helps you out....Oh yeah big ripbaits in a hitch or carp pattern and swim baits may get ya a big un.

Thanks, Tom.

Sounds like some of my favorite colors for Oro - pumpkin, watermelon. Is the fuscia thunder close to morning dawn? I use a lot of four and five inch Robos for dropshotting, do I want to go bigger? Also, I usually go Texas, weedless, weightless with Senkos and cut-tails, do I want to add weight?

Thanks, again!

Speedo,
Fuscha thunder is a black top purple stripe with white belly and purple flake in the black and purple parts. I like to use those new fat robo worms. Its a real good shad look to it. Oh DO NOT USE the small mosquito hooks I use a 1-1/0 gamakatsu EWG.

As far as the senkos with weight no use them weedless and weightless. For the cut tails throw them how you choose I like them on Carolina rigs and weightless but I throw them diffrently on each rig.

Oh and I like 17lb P line 100% flurocarbon for most of my CL and Delta fishing.

hey don't forget
......................... a jig, senko and weight if it blowing hard but usually clear lake is a shallow body of water. i have had my days saved by slow rolling a texas rig. if they are not shallow look for that secondary structure 10-15 feet of the bank.
good luck, saLTIE-

1/8 oz darter heads w/6 Roboworm Aarrons Magic worms around the docks, rocks. Brown and orange jigs around the same cover as above....smelly jelly shad or dad smeared all over evrything! As far as Senkos,I PERSONALLY have ALWAYS caught my biggest Clear Lakers on a Junebug 6-7"er...with-yep smelly jelly EVERYWHERE! Hard baits....Speed Trap in Chrome/Blue back or a spro crankbait that resembles a hitch ( dont know the color name) but its kinda brownish gold with a black back-I would suggest changing out the hooks though-I have lost some BIG uns on Clear Lake with the original Spro hooks. Good Luck-Let us know how you did!

Check out www.bobtheinguide.com
Bob is a great guy, he can show you around the lake and put you on fish. He also has very reasonable rates, I have been going out with Bob for several years, you won't be dissapointed.
