Hyacinth problem grows out of control in Stockton
Some say this poses a threat to safety, security

STOCKTON, Calif. (KCRA) —Parts of the waterways in Stockton are a sea of green -- and a plant known as hyacinth is being blamed for clogging sections of the Delta.

Some even said Wednesday the plant invasion could become a threat to safety and security.

"Maybe two years ago it was pretty bad, but not this bad," said Terry Craig, harbor master at the Village West Marina. "We just can't keep up with it."

The situation has even impacted business, since boats can't leave or get into the marina, Craig said.

Bill Wells, with the California Delta Chambers and Visitors Bureau, said the city is supposed to keep the plants under control through spraying and removal, but the problem is only growing -- and it goes beyond being a nuisance.

"Without the ability for law enforcement boats to move around and other boats to (move) around, it can very likely be a terrorist threat there," Wells said.

He made several calls reporting the issue, but never had his calls returned, he said.

So, Wells wrote a letter to the California Natural Resources Agency, hoping the problem can be addressed at the state level.

Stockton resident Michelle Riojas has worked at the restaurant at the Village West Marina for years, and she's witnessed several water emergencies.

"We've had a couple incidents where a couple people have left here intoxicated and what not -- and we need the emergency to get through, and they can't get through," Riojas said. "It's scary, scary situation."

The harbor master said it will take thousands of dollars for the Village West Marina to remove the hyacinth on its own, but people there hope Mother Nature can help untangle the web of weeds.

"I'm praying for a freeze," Craig said. "Cold weather and frost will kill the plant."
