Learn the Improved Clinch knot step-by-step

Post by WB Staff »

The Improved Clinch knot is one of the most widely used fishing knots.

It provides a good method of securing a fishing line to a hook, lure, or swivel. The "improved" version shown here includes an extra tuck under the final turn. It is commonly used to fasten the leader to the fly. Because it is harder to tie in heavier lines it is not recommended if you are using over 30 lb test line.

I've always believed twisting the line is not the right way to tie this knot. Probably for the last 30 years, I've been "wrapping" not twisting the line with this knot. I think the difference is the twist puts the line in a "shear" angle.

This is my favorite knot, but as the vision starts to go, this one is tougher to tie; too hard to get the tag end through that very small hole.
Using the Berkley knot a bit more these days.
