To chip or not to chip?

Post by fpomilia »

I have 2 GEN 2 HDS 8s with insight and structure Scan. When I purchased the units, 4 years ago,I was told the lowrance maps in the unit were as good as anything on the market and did not need to purchase another map chip. The units and maping have been great but with all types of electronics there are always comming out with something new and improved. Have done alot of research with the CHIRP upgrade and I think it is still to new to add it to my units. I am looking at purchasing the Navionics Platinum Hot Map for my unit. Any suggestions and or recommendations beside purchasing a new GEN 3?

This is a personal choice to a certain extent. Research that product and see if it will work for your needs. I personally find that making my own mapping from my sonar logs of my fishing areas are the best maps anywhere.

Go to lowrance.com and search Insight Genesis to learn more. You can download all my mapping from the social map feature. I have a ton of hours on Clear Lake for example.

I would suggest visiting http://www.navionics.com and comparing the mapping. The Lowrance do come with decent mapping but the Naivonics Charts have an advantage in that they take data from all uses. The app for your phone and tablet also allows anglers to access mapping without having to plug in your unit. I would highly suggest investing in a Navionics Platinum Plus Western region. You will have access to the freshest data for a year.

Seeing is believing:
