Front sonar not picking up fish, console sonar does

Post by Tony M »

I have a HDS-9 touch at console and a HDS-7 touch on the front. Both are Gen2. I can pick up fish on the console unit, but when I go over the same spot the front unit will not pick them up. The settings are identical on both units. The console unit is using the puck that came with the boat (1999 Ranger). The front unit is using a built in transducer in a MinnKota Fortrex. Any one have any idea's?

If you can borrow a transducer extension cable you can check the front unit off the back xdcr. This will tell you if that tm ducer is bad.

Is the Generic 83kHz/200kHz the correct setting for the MinnKota Max universal sonar?

That is the correct setting for the built in transducer. I would not use a built in transducer though. Those are made to work with any make of electronics and are not best for the clearest and precise detail. You will find better results with a Lowrance puck transducer installed on the trolling motor using a pipe clamp. Your built in transducer may have failed from the sound of your issue and this may force you to get a good Lowrance 83/200 puck transducer. I'm certain you will have better results.

Just to make sure it is the transducer, get a spare puck transducer from someone and unplug your current transducer and plug in the Lowrance transducer into the sonar plug on the back of your HDS 7 and drop the puck transducer into the water when you think you are over fish and see if your have better results.

I do have a new Lowrance 83/200 transducer. I will install it and see if that does the trick.
Thanks for the response.
