HDS Gen 3 Standby Issues

Post by Alax »

Have a HDS Gen 3 up front with broadband puck and Structure scan transducers mounted on the trolling motor. I hit standby on the graph, pull up the trolling motor and move. When I get to the next spot, put the trolling motor in the water and turn the standby off both transducers are reading 1500' deep and it takes anywhere from 3 minutes to 25 minutes to find actual bottom.. I've already selected both transducers in the settings, and so far Lowrance has been no help, they sent a replacement that does the same thing. Any ideas or anyone else having these problems?

Try this. Instead of putting the unit is StandBy, change it to a full chart page. When you get to the new spot drop in the TM and switch to your sonar page.

Tried switching it to full page chart this past weekend, same thing. When I put the trolling motor back in and switch back to the sounders, it takes forever to find bottom.. If I let it go, I'll fish a spot without it ever picking up the bottom.. I'm also still working with lowrance customer service to resolve the issue..

So the next thing to try is to switch front unit with the console unit to see it it still happens. This will only tell you IF the problem is in the new Gen3.
Have you tried this on the street? Have the trolling motor in place and run the routine?

Has support asked yo to create a service report from your unit yet?

I have the same exact issue with my Gen 3 HDS 9 up front. The only fix I've found is after getting to your new spot, go into "manual" mode and select your depth. The unit will readjust, then I go back into "auto" mode.

Very discouraging. But this works for now. I have yet to call Lowrance, I've only had them out two times.

Your unit shows 1500' also after you return TM to the water?

I also have and HDS 7 gen 2 that I can hook up to the front sounders and have no issues; I put the gen 2 in standby and move, next spot put the trolling motor in and close the standby and it finds bottom in less than 10 seconds. I have a ticket with lowrance and they have actually sent me a replacement and the replacement has the same issue. Very frustrating to say the least and I'm waiting on a call back from a customer service supervisor.

I had the same problem and the solution is to ensure that the unit on console is on standby before you take the unit at the TM off standby. If both units are on it will change the transducer on the unit at the TM. When I talked to the tech they said they are aware and working on a solution.

Only happens if I have both units on.

So if this is the case, you should be able to duplicate the problem in the driveway and test the remedy.

My solution is far faster...upon returning the TM to the water, hit "advanced" on the front graph, choose a depth. The graph will register within a few seconds, then go back to "advanced" and hit "auto". Literally takes 5 seconds. Just wanted to throw it out there!

Do you have an Ethernet network cable connecting the two units? If so, remove that Ethernet cable and the units will not try to share different transducers. I see you have an LSS on the trolling motor so there is no need for the Ethernet and the problems that network presents with menu and transducer information sharing. I have a NMEA network in my boat to share waypoints over that network and don't have any of the issues that come with the transducer sharing via the Ethernet connectivity.

I spent the afternoon trying to duplicate this issue...couldn't make it happen.Tried with two gen3's and tried with a gen2 and Gen3. 3 units on my boat, N2K, Ethernet, and 3 xdcrs. The only thing I don't have is a trolling motor.
Watching with interest.

I just realized the OP said, 'put the trolling motor back down and hit standby...'. Missing something here because after you put the unit into standby, you can't tap standby again, you must tap the power button. This bring unit outof standby.

I guess I should have stated earlier that I do not have my units networked, and I can duplicated it in the driveway. Its funny, when I put the gen 2 on standby the broadband sounder quits clicking and when I put the gen 3 on standby the broadband sounder just keeps clicking away. I'm still waiting for a resolution from lowrance and have asked for a refund from lowrance since the initial unit I purchased had this problem and the replacement they sent has the same problem. I would actually just like the unit that I paid for to work like it is supposed to, but after dealing with this fro the last 2 and a half months I'm leaning towards trying to get my money back and maybe go with a different brand.
