ROCKLIN Ca. - Staying true to their nicknames, James Matsuoka - aka “Ninja” and Preston Henson - aka “Big Country”, used both stealth and power to establish, and stay on a pattern that for two days kept them within striking distance of the lead, and allowing them – on the final day, to drop a big hammer on their adversaries to win the first-ever Bass Pro Shops Open held at Folsom Lake.
“This was an amazing event and this 3-day elimination style format taught us a ton about how valuable planning, patience and confidence are in winning big events”, noted an elated James and Preston as they hoisted high their first place plaques for all in the large crowd of spectators at the final day weigh-in to see.
James and Preston indicated that the key to catching three good limits each day, was throwing the River2Sea “Rover” top water bait up against the bank first thing in the morning – but before the sun hit the water. When that pattern slowed down, they went to a River2Sea 5/8-ounce brown/purple jig that as James put it,” absolutely destroyed them”.
After 3-days of fierce competition, they caught fifteen fish that weighed a total of 40.62 pounds to capture the inaugural Bass Pro Shop Open crown, $4,000 in cash, and some bragging rights that will last a lifetime.
The crowd received tons of "swag" gifts from the anglers at the final weigh-in
