HB Side Imaging Range lines

Post by Hookset5 »

Hey all,
I'm not a huge SI user as I don't fully understand how to use it. If the SI Range is set at 40' I assumed it was shooting a beam 40' to the right and 40' feet to the left but considering that same range line also accounts for depth, how can it be true that it's 40' right or left?

It always shoots a beam into infinity and than captures the returns. When you set it to 40' it only shows you returns in that range (but the other data was still received). The water column is additional information on your screen. There is an option to blend out the water column which might help you understand the SI picture better and when you are comfortable with it you can add the water column back in.
Hope this makes sense.

That's strange. On my 899 it shows incremental lines (range lines) that are consistent with the water column depth.
How could 20' down plus 40' wide equal 40'?

Sorry, saying the water column was additional information was wrong from me. It's included in the 40'
Check out this image which shows you the transducer beam (everything within the 40' would be included)

I understand now but it is entirely misleading. you just have to deduct the depth to get the distance. A rock at 35' isnt 35' off starboard. Thanks
