Record Fish Qualifications & Requirements?

Post by Morgan »

What are the requirements for a state record? For a world record? What is different between them?
Can you call one number for Fish & Wildlife and get a response?
What about scales? Are multiple scales required? Certified?
What about witnesses?

It would be great if there were one place that listed the requirements and differences.

Here is a link to the IGFA application - this may help you with some of the info that they request.

Wow! Thanks, That's a lot if information I would never thought of getting. Anyone can catch a record at anytime and being prepared sure would save some disappointment.

CDFW is placing a certified scale at Bullards Bar, in fact it will be there today 2/28. It will be available at Emerald Cove Marina during their normal business hours. Included with the scale is a highlight of requirements for IGFA certification, but you should review their documentation to ensure nothing is overlooked. Biggest mistake made by anglers is the fish must be weighed on land. Weights taken on a boat or floating dock will not be accepted by IGFA.

Currently state record requires identification by an employee of CDFW but I am working to get that amended to allow for identification from clear photograph such as allowed by IGFA.

Here is link to state record requirements: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Records

Also, the state has a Trophy Bass Program. So even if you don't catch a world record, you can still get recognition for your trophy catch: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Inl ... ertificate

Thanks, Getting it done by a photograph and a measuring scale would encourage catch and release, thanks for working on that.

Mike:

Interesting story on your brush with a giant bass. I would like to point out though that Jed did not "snag" that fish. Anybody who knows anything about bed fishing, especially in deep water, knows exactly how that jig ended up just outside the mouth. And, they were not disqualified by IGFA, they chose not to submit the paperwork. Just saying.

Kyle, thanks for always having our back.
If the State of California would let DFW set water policies, we fishermen would be much better off.
