Delta Speed Limit
Delta Speed Limit
I was out on Empire Cut Sunday obeying the 5mph speed limit during the four hour high tide window. Problem was I seemed to be the only one doing it. Every bass boat I saw was running wide open and only a couple of cabin cruisers seemed to be making an effort. Has anyone been ticketed for driving too fast during the designated 5mph window and if so, how much did the ticket cost? Thanks in advance!

Re: Delta Speed Limit
I don't know how much that ticket would be, but any ticket you get while operating a boat goes on you DMV record, and affects you auto insurance, too.

It simply could be from it not being posted and guys not understanding the current sanctions on where they are.

Re: Delta Speed Limit
Are they enforcing the closure then? Since empire is the edge of the off limit area , seems like enforcement would be right there stopping people?
Re: Delta Speed Limit
I hear ya Freefall. However, if it's like the rules of the road, ignorance is no excuse. 12 years ago I got a $150 ticket on the delta from the Sheriff for not having a throwable flotation in my boat. Anyone else ever get this ticket?
Re: Delta Speed Limit
Think about it though, if you're not on WB, how was/is this publicized? If it isn't posted on the water, how is the pubic supposed to know? You can close launching in the marinas inside the area, but short of clearly posting the areas on site or having LE at the site it's impossible to implement.

A ban on boating in San Joaquin County is affecting people who use the waterways for business. But, the county’s office of emergency services said protecting levees is important.

San Joaquin Office of Emergency Services released this statement today with the same map that has been out since March 2nd.
These are the current Delta River and Slough Closures (as of March 14, 2017):
As of this notice all Rivers and other South Delta waterways highlighted on the map below remain closed to recreational boating traffic (with some exceptions) until further notice by the San Joaquin County, Office of Emergency Services.
By phone they said...
Coast Guard, Fish and Game and Sheriff Boats should be enforcing this until it is lifted.

Lots of places besides WB trying to get the word out. Here are some more places trying to spread the info.

Most of San Joaquin County’s Delta rivers and waterways are now closed to recreational boating. High waters and fragile levees make the order necessary.
The San Joaquin River at Vernalis is at the danger stage.
The San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services closed the San Joaquin River south of Stockton to boaters last week.
Now the order is extended to the sloughs and waterways surrounding the Delta islands west of Stockton affecting many marinas all the way to Discovery Bay.
John Austin with OES says boating at this time has a major potential for harm.
“A lot of them will travel at higher speeds," says Austin. "This creates a wave wash with high winds and the high water can help create a worsening erosion on the water side of the levees of those islands.”
Austin says boaters could also interfere with crews working on the levees and the closure could stay in effect for a long period.
Austin adds that a large amount of floating debris is another safety concern for boaters.

Does this mean the pink/orange map you just posted is not accurate anymore?WB Staff wrote:CapRadio Rich Ibarra

The statement that was released on March 14 above is the most recent that was given. That is the current state as far as information given by Office of Emergency Services and that is to remain until further notice. There has been no details or insight on "further notice" except there's been no further notice since March 14.
Re: Delta Speed Limit
To my point that sign is on land. I haven't been down there recently so while it may be posted on the water i.e. Floating notice or the river blocked by a buoy line, I doubt it. So, how would the average person know if say you went down that way from wherever north? I haven't seen it talked about on the news lately either. Just saying

I know everyone means well, but none of the links in this notice are valid any longer ...... they are all dated 2/27 or 2/28. The information they list is dated and the maps that come up are dated.
The ONLY reliable resource for San Joaquin County Delta Closures/Restrictions is at the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services ( OES ) See the following link, scroll down to River & Slough Closures Updated March 14, 2017
This is the latest current information. No other Counties have restrictions

Re: Delta Speed Limit
I called OES today and they told me updates to the restrictions are coming soon, most likely before this weekend. Nothing is official until they put it on paper but look for lessened restrictions soon.
Re: Delta Speed Limit
Here's the latest update
https://www.sjgov.org/department/oes/pd ... 032117.pdf
It appears the same as before except the Mildred Island area, where the window before and after high tide for 5mph is now an hour either side, instead of two hours either side.

Actually it is not the same:monte300 wrote:Here's the latest update

They added a lengthy path from the Orwood Railroad Bridge South down Old River down to Tracy..... this is now "Orange" ( 2 hrs before / 2 hrs after high tide = 5 mph )
Previously it was "pink" and closed.
Re: Delta Speed Limit
Thanks for pointing that out. I store my boat at Whiskey Slough and my main focus is the Empire and Turner Cut areas.
