New battery charger

Post by mrheuby »

My original battery charger finally bit the dust and needs to be replaced. Since I haven't had to buy one for 12 years I am not quite up to date on the best one out there. Looking for a 4 bank model. Any input would be great.

the old chargers used to be " analog" based and could end up overcharging a battery ---which shortens the life of the battery . Most of the newer units are "digital " designs and will not overcharge the batteries .
I bought one of the newer Dual units and it works fine .

I replaced a "Guest" with a Minn Kota Precision. Excellent unit.

Great Charger, my only thoughts especially after seeing this on a friends facebook feed is to upgrade the fuses to a push button circuit breaker https://www.wholesalemarine.com/sea-dog ... 79231.html

I would recommend that upgrade \ protection for all battery systems between the chargers.

Thanks for all the information it has given me allot to think about. On that circuit breaker are you installing them on each battery?

Yes, my boat has one at each of the positive leads from the battery to the charger and also from the battery to the TM. Basscat wires it this way on each boat and it makes sense, just match up your breaker size to the load. This way you can reset the breaker easily and not worry about fuses going out or not working and burning up wires at night like Lance's buddies boat at the delta.
