Oh man, is this a good topic! Hopefully Cooch and Hemphill will jump in. The jig is a big fish bait AND a numbers bait, that you need to get dialed in, especially on the lakes with spots.

For spot lakes like Shasta, 1/2 oz. football head is the gold standard - lots of brands to choose from that all work. TNT makes an M80 (I think that's what it's called) that is really good. Bass Patrol jigs are inexpensive and work well. Larry is a Rodstrainer guy.

I like fairly simple brown colors - brown-purple, brown orange, and straight brown. Yamamoto 5" twin tails most of the time. Various versions of green pumpkin (Cooch knows the #'s; I like 330 - green pumpkin with purple and copper flake) and purple (June Bug in low light conditions is killer) all will work. Don't over think the colors, keep 'em simple.

Lots of ways to fish them. Simplest is the slow drag. Find a transition bank - mud to rock, chunk rock to smaller rock or gravel, etc... At the mouth of the Pit, where all the standing timber is, is a good area (45 degree sloping points with rock, anywhere). Depending on the water level, look for some type of point near the wood, with some depth on it. Put the boat a little more than a cast length from the bank. Fire a cast to the bank, and let the jig sink to the bottom. Just reel really slow - I'm mean slow - slower then you think. Feel the jig crawling on the bottom, hitting stuff (you'll get snagged often, so have extra jigs handy). Get used to what the bottom feels like. The KERTHUNK / tick tick tick is a fish, and will definitely feel different than the rocks - you will know. As the water temps drop, the jig bite will get better and better. By November, it will be on fire, and the fish will be shallower than you'd think.

Keep at it dude - it WILL pay off!!

I was just up there for four days......we caught a TON of fish, just no size.....largest 2.5lbs....but they were eating 1/4oz. brown jigs with 4" twin tails / zoom super chunk jr as well as 1/2oz. green pumpkin and brown/purple spider jigs

Lake Shasta has all 3 bass types; Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted bass in the same areas.
Shasta shore is very sparse with cover, mostly slopping clay banks with rocky areas. If you find wood it will hold bass.
If you are new to jig fishing and know to use Texas rigged worms with bullet weight, fish your jigs using the same presentation; cast and retrieve along the bottom.
My suggestion is use GYCB plain black weedless football head jig, 3/8 to 1/2 oz with Gamakasu hooks. Add GYCB 4" double tail Hula grub in 221 and 330. The compact 4" grub will get more strikes from all 3 bass types.
Strike detection is easy for aggressive bass, takes time to learn the less aggressive strikes. Remember rocks don't move, added pressure is usually a strike, loss of weight is usually a strike so set the hook.
The GYCB Hula grub and football jig work everywhere in Califorina, is inexpensive with high quality hooks, everything you need in a casting jig.

5" twin tail grub, Yamamoto 222 color. Had some success with 190.
