are turkey shoots a thing of the past?
so cal used to have turkey shoots between Thanksgiving and Christmas all the time I haven't seen one in a long time.

NO! They still go on, but there are a bunch of people out there afraid of getting in trouble because of the no permit thing. As long as you do not advertise it publicly that money is involved you should be fine. I have even heard stories where T shoot participants were weighing in fish and someone would ask for a permit! Keep it low key.
