Where to go end of March?

Post by ACP »

I'm taking my son out of school for a week road trip to Northern Cal at the end of March for some much needed fishing. Which waters would you hit if you wanted to get your son into some good bass fishing? We would like to fish 2-3 different bodies of water. Any species of bass.

Berryessa - Has all 3 bass species with great size. In March you can find some fish on beds and the majority in pre spawn. A lot of big fish are caught in March there.
Clear Lake - Most fish will be pre spawn staging outside of spawning areas. Reaction baits, swimbaits, jigs and worms will get you bit.
Delta - Pre-spawn bite should be pretty good at the end of March. Square bills, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits are great reaction baits on the delta in the spring. Flipping soft plastics and jigs around grass, tules and wood. The delta is an expansive tidal water that is constantly changing, I would spend at least 2 days there to get an idea of how it fishes and how to navigate around. There's a lot of submerged debris and shallow bars around the delta.
Camanche, New Melones, Shasta, Don Pedro, Pardee, Bullards Bar and Folsom are all good options as well. End of march is a great time for catching big fish and plenty of numbers in NorCal. Keep an eye on the weather, warming trend can fire the bite up quickly and cold fronts can slow it down too.

If you want to be sure your trip is a success, hire a guide for the lake(s) you choose.

Have you ever fished the Delta before? Or tidal fisheries for bass? If not, and you're mostly familiar with lakes, considering you have a small window of time, head to the lakes mentioned above. The Delta can be a blast that time of year, but there are definitely some differences due to the tidal influence which could delay you getting on fish right away. Whereas, if you're familiar with general lake fishing, you could probably figure out a pattern quicker on one of the nor Cal lakes.
