17.44 wins New Melones opener

Post by AnglersPress »

ANGELS CAMP, Ca. - The 2018 Coors Light Future Pro Tour season opened with the biggest field ever for its central valley region, as 85 teams converged on New Melones reservoir, to participate in an event dubbed the “Calaveras Clash”, a pre-cursor to the 2017-18 Coors Light FPT Classic championship event to be held at New Melones reservoir in just four short weeks.

Although pre-fishing for this opening season event was extremely good for most - the week prior to the event, the “big fish bonanza” that most predicted would take place never materialized, as overall, weights were surprisingly down, and the bigger fish never appeared.

But Waterford residents, and new comers to the Future Pro Tour, Sean Donges and Marie Qarqat applied a different strategy than most other teams, and using dropshot techniques, managed to bring a 17.44 pound winning limit of bass to the scales, to capture their first-ever Coors Light Future Pro tour title.

“We had a thought that the fish would not be up shallow, which is why we were drop shottin in deeper water”, Sean noted. Words can’t express how proud we are to have won such a big event, and especially against the incredible competition the Future Pro Tour is known for”, he added.

Mike Gomez, also from the Waterford area, seized the day and minus his regular partner and brother Victor (who was out enjoying Disneyland with his family), captured 2nd place using R2Sea S-Waver baits. “That S-Waver swimbait is the real deal”, Mike noted, but was careful not to disclose the size or color, as he and Victor will be participating in the upcoming Coors Light Future Pro Tour Classic Championship event that will be held on New Melones on March 9-11th.

My brother Victor might think he’s at the “Happiest place on earth”, but he might have thought different were he fishing with me today at New Melones!”, he added playfully.

Congratulations to all top teams!

We would like to thank all that participated in this opening season event, as well as our family of “blue-chip” partnering sponsors for continuing to help make the Coors Light Future Pro tour, the premier - and most exciting, amateur bass fishing circuit in the west.

Next stop for FPT’s central region…is March 24th on Lake Don Pedro!

See you there!
