I only have the 400A which is a 5.2:1 I know a lot of guys use the 300A though. I will say that i have not put a ton of time swimbait fishing with this reel so as to whether it will hold up or not i cannot say i have switched to the curado for most of my swimbaits. I would suggest a curado 300d or e for smaller swimbaits and either a cardiff 400 or a calcutta 400 for larger baits. I dont think you can go wrong with any of these reels.

I prefer the Dobyns 795 ML it is an awesome rod. I also use a Shimano Crucial that does a good job that is heavier than the Dobyns. I truelly believe the Dobyns may be the best one out there.

The smallmouth will definitely eat those stockies. There are a number of great baits out there, I would think the realprey alewife or some of the Mattlures shads would be good. Also the Triton bull shad is an awesome bait for lakes with shad. If there are bluegills in there a must have is a Mattlure...

If i were you i would get a Curado 300E to start and then buy a calcutta, you are going to want two setups anyways to throw large and small baits so why not just start with the one you are going to use the most in the beginning. I agree that for bigger baits the 400 is a much better option but for a...

I too would recommend the Mattlures Hardgill. The slow sink sinks very slow and IMO the hardgills are the best bluegill bait on the market. They are just so realistic and just flat out catch fish.

make sure you get there early those public ramps at Barryessa fill up fast. Good luck there are some good fish in there.
