Re: Clearlake Fish Die Off --- New Approach
There is a need for an organization to represent reservoir fisheries in California-no doubt. I have been personally trying to lay the groundwork to do so. However- to provide advocacy and research at the level you speak of for DU, CalWaterfowl, etc, etc-there is considerable overhead and resources r...

Re: Unprecedented Clear Lake Fish Die-Off: Dead fish islands about the size of three football fields.
Clear lake's water quality problems are MUCH more complex and bigger than spraying weeds. The aquatic macrophytes being sprayed are going to die off eventually at some point regardless making a fish kill an annual possibility even if spraying didn't occur. I seem to recall a series of huge wildfire...

Re: Unprecedented Clear Lake Fish Die-Off: Dead fish islands about the size of three football fields.
Well...I have to chime on a few things. There is some pure nonsense in this thread and a few good points. First and foremost, there is a problem with anoxic conditions in Clear Lake resulting in massive fish kills. As Steve points out, yes, that does have the potential from a population standpoint t...

Y'all - Steve is an insider of the fish community. He hears and sees a lot of **** that he cannot openly comment about. I spent many years doing the same thing - I however, do not have to worry about MY job! Lets just say this - those who control, or want to control water, do not care about the fish...

We had the Calfed, Bay-Delta project, this, that and the next...have there been any measurable imrovements in salmon pops? Nope! still an unstoppable POD. Funny...wonder what the common denominator is? Oh wait...it's too much water out of the Delta. Where's my 500 million? I just solved the problem.

Rangers have nothing to do with it. That is entirely on Lime Saddle Marina and folks running that facility. In 37 years-I've seen little effort to clear the ramp.

By filtered I mean NGO and non-profits operate with huge overhead - and often, grant money will be awarded but go through 1 or 2 foundations or groups who "administer" the grants. Usually a lot of wasteful overhead. Often a lot of feel good jobs with no accountability and don't really resu...

Grants are often filtered through multiple channels and the money's finally available for any meaningful programs is minimal. Note: the $96/hr is a loaded rate, not hourly wage. Regardless: just ways to tax, tax, tax. Typical bureaucratic solution.

They will lose more money in tax revenue if fewer guys come stay and fish. Just hurting their own economy. They will never be Napa County. Embrace the resources you have - this would not happen in most states, especially ones with world renowned fisheries.

Here is the deal, some components of retardants used in fire suppression are toxic to aquatic organisms. However, it is not like there are significant quantities of it entering the aquatic ecosystem. Yeah, DFG is not proactive with management of reservoirs in California. I think the DFW is proactive, with it's tournament permitting process, and it's bag/creel limits.
