Thru hull transducer

Post by jsc11700 »

Finally getting ready to mount my electronics! I have an Hds 7 with structure scan that I will be mounting on a z20. The current 2d transducer that I have for this unit is the HST-WSBL. I would like to mount this one as a thru hull transducer. Will this one work as a thru hull? I realize that I will not get accurate temp but I'm not worried about that since my structure scan has temp also.

Thanks

The skimmer type ducer can be glued into the bilge area of a bass boat just like a puck type ducer. The only difference is the housing and when mounting the skimmer type ducer, the glue needs to be a little deeper than with the puck.

Get some plumbers putty, take a lump and roll it in your hands to make it into a "rope". Clean the inside of the bilge area free of any oil residue and make a circle dam out of the rope of putty about 3/4 of an inch deep. Take a two part epoxy and fill the dam with the glue. It is vitally important to make sure there are no air bubbles in the glue. Set the skimmer ducer into the glue. Make sure the ducer will be facing straight down through the bottom of the boat. You can place a small weight on the ducer to hold it down and let sit overnight to set.

The ping or sound from the skimmer ducer will pass right through the fiberglass and the receiver in the ducer will receive the signal just like the puck type ducer mounted in the same way.

Just one warning. The Skimmer you are planning on mounting in the bilge is currently providing temp readings. If you put it into the bilge that is where it will read from. No problem you say, just read off the LSS right? Hold on. The Touch units have a little issue in that they select temp from any 2D transducer automatically and will not allow you to select another temp source as long as a 2D source remains connected. So you will not be able to read water temp with the set-up you are going to do. Your choices are to remove the pin from the Skimmer connector that sends temp, install a NMEA 2000 network with a temp probe, or get a new 2D transducer with remote temp probe. Removing the temp pin from the Skimmer has been discussed on BassBoatCentral.com with photos to show how it's done if that's the way you decide to go but you will have to search for it.

NoCal,

You mention the Touches having issues defaulting to the 2D transducer but these are GEN2 units. Is this issue the same with these units? I have noticed that when switching from 2D to LSS there is occasionally a few decimal difference in the temp reading, leading me to believe that it truly is reading the temp from my LSS2 transducer. Also, there is currently a puck style transducer already mounted (PD-WBL) from an old LCX unit. According to Lowrance this transducer is compatible with the HDS Gen 2 units. Maybe I would be better off just using this transducer and holding on to the skimmer for a back up if the need should arise?

If you heat the two part epoxy after you mix it thoroughly, it will help the bubbles to rise to the surface. Breathing on them will break them, or pass a torch quickly across the surface. Don't use a torch if you mix in a plastic container. I use a hair dryer under my solo mixing cup (from take-out salsa) to heat it.

Sorry, somehow I read that they were Touch units. Since they are Gen 2 button units, you will have no problem selecting either transducer as the source for Temp. My mistake.
