Post by Mitch »

Ok, I know that Clear Lake is on their own Depth scale called RUMSEY, but does anybody really know exactly how many INCHES or FEET a Rumsey really is ??

The Rumsey measurement was created by - you guessed it - Mr. Rumsey - in 1884. The Rumsey is measured in feet. In other words, 4.21 Rumsey is about 4 1/4 foot above zero. When Clear Lake went to zero two winters ago, I used to joke that the lake was empty!! In fact - it went below zero and there was plenty of water. The problem when it gets to zero, launching boats is very difficult. Remember, Clear Lake is a natural lake, so it only changes elevation by a few feet each year. It couldn't change much since the deepest part when full is only 58 ft! The deepest part is a little south of the narrows, on the east side, near Pirates Cove That whole area is fairly deep,

To add perspective, it's about as high as it got all of last year.

So, ok that explains "most" of what a Rumsey is, now let me ask this: at 0 Rumsey how deep is it in LAKEPORT which is where the gauge is at that shows +/- Rumsey relative to the Grisby Riffle ?

It is all relative to Grigsby Riffle, not Lakeport.

Zero Rumsey usually has 3-4 feet of water at the end of the City boat launches....generally speaking.
