20 Deep V Boat Owners - 150 Four Stroke Enough???

Post by shimanoangler »

Just purchased a new Tracker Targa 20, which is a 20'2" long boat with a full 8 1/2 foot beam.    This boat has a Merc 150 hp four stroke, which I have on a 19'6" long boat with an 8 foot beam and it worked great, but this new boat his heavier, wider and longer.   I am thinking repower before I hit the water while the motor is still brand new.  As soon as I hit the water, the motor is used and its trade value is less.   I am thinking that the boat would be better powered with a 200 hp Yamaha inline 4 four stroke.   Anyone with any experience with 20 foot deep Vs and 150 hp four stroke.?   Please share your feedback/experience.   Thank you

I would go with a 225hp SHO. Under powering is usually a frustrating endeavor.

I'm guessing that boat will top out in the low 40's. How fast are you looking to go?
Length will play no part in top end speed. Width and weight combined will probably take a few mph off the top end with what your current boat gets. Heck, being its a new motor it might perform the same.

I have a 19 ft ranger 619 with a yammi 200. I only run full throttle when getting on a plane. Otherwise I'm running 3500to 4500 rpm. I'm pretty happy with the motor size. I'm sure it would run with less hp but I might have trouble getting on a plane if I'm fully loaded with gear , full live wells, and 4 or 5 people with a 150. I guess if the boat is rated for a 150 it would handle it. Check with the boat manufacturer. If your targa is aluminum, it is quite a bi lighter than my boat and might be well suited for that 150. My boat tops out around 58 mph, but I rarely run that fast. I'm much happier running at 30 to 40 mph.

With the exception of brands like Express and G3 aluminum boats seem to run approx 10 mph less then a comparable glass rig. I have a 17.5 V-type aluminum bass boat with a 115 hp Johnson and i'm lucky to hit 40 mph. Usually its 37 or 38 mph.
The hull on that Targa looks a lot like my boats hull. Slow and heavy.

I just found this.

I didn't look it over much but those are some pretty sad numbers for a 225 opti. (46 mph wot)

the targa has a pretty deep vee in the transom. i believe its a 20 degree deadrise . that accounts for it being slower than other 'deep vee' boats (my 619 has 12 degrees deadrise in the stern). However that should translate to a smoother ride in chop.

That is what I am wondering. Not looking to go 100 mph, really only want to get out of the water when taking off AND to be able to keep the boat on plane without having the motor revving at 5k rpm... Top end speed isn't as important as having the feeling that I have a motor than can move the boat when its time to move. I have the 150 hp on my current 19'6" long 97" beam boat and it is fine. Does very well with that boat. Wondering if the extra length, beam and weight will cause a significant difference.

I have the Lund Crossover, which is 19ft length, 8 ft beam deep V, with the Merc. 150 four stoke, it is more than enough power. Max horsepower for my Lund is 175 hp but I'm happy with the 150hp. Don't know how much difference 25 more hp would give me. Your Targa is longer and maybe heavier but I think the 150hp would work for you.

The hull you inquired about is rated for 250hp. I would not go with anything lower then a 200hp V6. Good luck
