i saw this but still can't find this in writing yet ??? talked to a couple marina people and some club people but no one has seen anything in writing ??. sure would be better for us if the people writing regs and laws about boating or fishing were people who either boated or fished ??

I talked to the Boat Sheriff @ the Delta, you do not need a hundred foot rope attached just within reach. The cushion is supposed to be on the top part of the boat, not in a locker, he suggested sitting on it when on plane. He also said that if questioned, and if you pass the "attitude test," you won't have a problem. he was cool about it, just told me the rules as they are written. he said that it all boils down to boater attitude and conduct.

with all of these discussions about a throwable cushion, why couldn't a boat manufacturer make the seat cushion into a CG approved throwable cushion? Maybe velcro the pad in the bottom of the seat and it would always be there within reach, and out of the way.

I used to carry a ski rope just for this purpose. The handle makes it easy to throw and gives the person being saved something good to hold onto. It can be coiled up pretty compact and weighs very little.

I do believe that the hundred foot of rope is to hang yourself after you see the ticket you got for not having the throw device in the boat!

i found the 2007 ABC's of the California Boating Law
http://www.dbw.ca.gov/Pubs/Abc/

look at the pdf file for:
9. Required Equipment
10.Recommended Additional Equipment

no where for 2007 does it say 100 feet of throw rope.

maybe with all the cutbacks, no one has updated the webpage for 2009.

i did find the paragraph on riding on the gunwale
www.boat-ed.com/abc/abc_specific_images/pdfs/ca_law.pdf

I believe you will find that no where does it require 100 ft of rope on inland waters. Now I do not know about off shore or water controled via USCG patrol, there it may. I do not have any USCG/ocean rules. None of the state/county patrols up here (n.e. Cal) show any such rule. They do require the throw cushion on the baot and that is a good thing and not a problem to cover, alongwith your required PFD's. Bill K :)

I dunno about this law

Post by rexford »

I bet less then 10% of boaters on the water follow this rule
due to the fact that if the throw flotation is stowed at least
I know its in the boat and I have one. If I were to try to keep
one on the deck it would quickly separate itself from the
boat on plane. I figure I have a better chance of getting a
warning for a throw cushion in the locker rather then on
a levy somewhere.

I would also like to point out that carbon monoxide is
dangerous and that swimmers should not be near the
engine while it is underway for risk of poisoning. Hard
not to do with the little spiny thing fluffing the water like
a bubble bath.

I have a 14' boat. If I am reading these regs right I am only required to have a USCG approved PFD for each person in the boat and that is all I need? I had a fire extiguisher but I took it out because it went bad. Never had a throw cushion.
