Two Winnipeg men caught fishing illegally at a cottage in Lake of the Woods were each fined more than $7,000 last month.
Matthew Slough and Kieran McCormick are suspended from fishing in Ontario for two years, after a conservation officer doing a fisheries inspection found evidence of ice fishing activity in front of a cottage on Clearwater Bay in March 2016, according to a news release from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
The conservation officer found that the men had been angling for lake trout in a closed area using restricted fishing gear and then made "false and misleading" statements to the officer. The case appeared in a Kenora court on Aug. 28.
