El Cajon Ford owner Paul Leader has been giving cash for clunkers, and now he is ready to serve up some cash for bass.

The 11th annual El Cajon Ford San Diego Team Open is set for Aug. 10-11 at El Capitan and Lower Otay reservoirs. The field will be split, with each angler getting a chance to fish both lakes on alternating days.

Sign-ups have been slow to come in, but tournament director John Cassidy at Angler's Arsenal in La Mesa said Leader has promised that the tournament is on whether it draws six or 60. Leader has said often that this tournament is his way of thanking fishermen for supporting his Ford dealership through the years.

“Paul said no matter how many show, we're going to put on a great show,” Cassidy said.

Top prize is $6,000, and the payouts go to ninth place, with an additional $1,000 for the biggest stringer of the tournament and $1,000 for the biggest bass.

Entry fee is $400 per team and includes a registration barbecue at 3 p.m. Sunday, hosted by Cafe 67 at Anglers Marine in Santee.

For planning purposes, Cassidy asks that anyone planning to participate in the tournament register online at elcajonford.com or by calling him at (619) 466-8355.

Late sign-ups will be accepted at Anglers Marine in Santee starting at 3pm Sunday August 9th. Rick Grover and his staff in Santee will host both the team meeting and draw.

“We only have 16 entries right now, but we had 52 last year after a high of 82 a few years back,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy expects very good fishing at El Capitan, but Lower Otay remains a wild card.

The awards ceremony, raffle and team meal are set for 2 p.m. Aug. 11 at El Monte Park in Lakeside.
