Just after dawn Wednesday, CDFW biologists, wardens and support staff gathered at the mouth of the Carmel River in Monterey County to help a federally threatened population of steelhead trout. The CDFW team netted and removed 62 non-native, predatory striped bass from the Carmel River Lagoon. Sixteen young, healthy steelhead were also caught but immediately released unharmed. The bass were weighed and measured at the beach and will be studied later to determine their age, origin and what they’ve been eating in the Lagoon. The Lagoon provides critical habitat for the fragile population of steelhead, serving as passage to the ocean and where the steelhead prepare for ocean life.
