Transducer caused loss of "Water Temp"

On the front I have a 958c with a built in transducer. It's been working fine for years and all of a sudden I lost the water temp reading. The source vanished also. So while working with a Humminbird tech rep. they told me to swap my 998c SI that was in my dash (which the water temp reading was just fine). The 958c still wouldn't read the water temp off the rear transducer. Then I was told to hook up the 998c SI up front and I did. Well now that unit lost it water temp reading. They won't read now on either transducer! A short in the front transducer knocked out both units? Every professional I've talked to said that would be extremely rare and they actually had never heard of such a thing. Humminbird said it would cost me about $350 for each unit to send them in and have them service them. Screw that!

Well I then took both of my units to a friend who has Humminbirds and plugged them in. Neither one would read the water temp.

Any ideas, experiences and/or suggestions?
